Max ‘Happy’ Mason had no endurance related successes before his grueling Appalachian Trail thru-hike. This mid-life experience transformed him and initiated a string of firsts.
He started running marathons, successfully stood for public office, became chairman of Habitat for Humanity/Doing Good Foundation, completed another ultradistance adventure by cycling across Australia through the desert (1888 miles), wrote an epic poem and published a book.
Married to Helen and proud father of Mungo, Max was born in Zimbabwe. He served in the military, gained a B.Soc.Sc in Psychology in South Africa and M.Sc Entrepreneurial Studies in Scotland. He is a New Zealand citizen who currently lives in Australia. Max believes a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and not taking oneself too seriously will solve most of life’s problems.
Happy Hiker is his first book which he believes is the first epic poem on the Appalachian Trail. He hopes his story will inspire others to take life-defining risks.
