Jeffrey W. Cohen

Jeff Cohen, Ph.D., currently serves as Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Acting Associate Dean in the School of Social Work and Criminal Justice and Executive Director of Global Affairs at the University of Washington Tacoma. His scholarship focuses on the criminalization of school bullying, intersections of gender, masculinities and crime, Integral theory, and the transformative impact of study abroad. He is co-author, with Robert A. Brooks, of two books focused on school bullying: Criminology Explains School Bullying (University of California Press, 2020) and Confronting School Bullying: Kids, Culture, and the Making of a Social Problem. (Lynne Rienner Press, 2014). He is also co-editor, with Robert A. Brooks, of a 10-book series (University of California Press) that explores the application of criminological theory to social problems including police violence, sex crimes, and white collar crime.

Jeff is a first-generation college student who earned a doctorate in criminology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2009. He teaches courses across the criminal justice curriculum, including courses focusing on men and masculinities, restorative justice, research methods, and diversity and social justice. In addition to traditional in-person and online courses, Jeff has led multiple study abroad programs, including to South Korea, the Netherlands, and Ireland and Northern Ireland. His passion for global learning, international education, and study abroad has led him to begin researching the relationship between study abroad and transformative learning.

Jeff also serves as President of the American Men's Studies Association (AMSA), an international organization dedicated to advancing the critical study of men and masculinities. Learn more about AMSA at www.mensstudies.org.
