As one of the last generations for whom book reading was integral to learning and leisure, novels expanded my horizons providing an insight into the way other people experienced the world. It enhanced my understanding of both myself and others, and led to a professional life of working with people and helping them to reappraise their own thinking. In writing I hope to convey a little of what I have come to understand of human thinking and action, whilst allowing the reader to compare and contrast my character’s views with their own. In the technological world of the twenty first century there is peace, escapism, interest and even food for thought to be found in a novel.

Both in the Merchant Navy and as a Probation Officer in Yorkshire, I have had countless chances to engage individually with my fellow man and woman. My first venture into print in 2018 attempted to provide a snapshot of the ethos and work of a Probation Officer when I started in the mid-1960s.

That led to my first novel, set itself in the 1960s, self-published in 2020. Tragic Coincidence moves from West London to the sparsely populated area of Assynt, northwest Scotland. I try to use my work experience of the different ways individuals live and interpret their lives to create a disparate set of characters. Whilst there is a fairly obvious mystery to unravel I attempt to involve the reader in the characters created more than the plot. A good number of readers, both male and female, have given me positive feedback.
