John M. Luce, a journalist before attending medical school, is an Emeritus Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and former Chief Medical Officer at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH). He is the co-author of Love Needs Care: San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic and its Pioneer Role in Treating Drug Abuse Problems; To Your Health: The Pleasures, Problems, and Politics of Alcohol; and Intensive Respiratory Care. Dr. Luce recently published My Journal of the Plague Year, which is available through Amazon.com. He lives in San Francisco with his wife, Judy, who is an Emeritus Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF and former Director of Oncology Services at SFGH. The Luces have two children.
