Dr Chandra Bhushan Varma (M.A.Gold-medallist; Delhi University; awarded by Dr R Venkataramana [formerly the President of India] for being first in order of merit); M.Phil (Delhi University); D.Litt (Ranchi University); Scholar of Australian National University at Canberra, Australia (1987-1991) and JN Tata Endowment; CSIR Scientist (QHS) at National Institute of Science Technology and Development Studies (NISTADS); Fellow, Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR); Jr Fellow (Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR); and Delhi University Merit scholarship holder.
Dr Varma has held top offices in several institutes of repute, viz., Chair of Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) to Royal Government of Cambodia & Visiting Professor at Sihanouk Buddhist University, Cambodia on deputation from Government of India; Assistant Executive Secretary & Head, Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and Ex officio Member Secretary, National Commission of History of Science; Associate Professor, BL Institute of Indology.
Dr Varma joined Department of Philosophy at University of Hyderabad as a Reader in 2004 against a permanent position; where he served in various capacities, e.g., Founder Head of Centre of Buddhist Studies; UGC-Project Director (under EMSTI Scheme), Associate Professor at Department of Philosophy; Member, Academic Council, Member Executive Council and Member of the University Court etc.
In Australia he served AIDAB,as Language Consultant; and as Language tutor at Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Government of Australia, at Canberra. He has been Language Consultant to Sahitya Akademi (Indian Academy of Letters) for Pali, Prakrit and Apabhramsa languages in New Delhi since 2002. Also, he worked as Editor of Motilal Banarsidass Indological Publications; and Associate Editor of Indian Journal of History of Science (INSA).
Dr Varma is particularly recognised for his expertise in translation of classical texts from Pali, Prakrit and Sanskrit in English and Hindi; and for his expertise in teaching Indian and Western Philosophies and Literatures at post-graduation level. He has been teaching at Post-Graduation level and the guiding the researchers for Ph.D. since 2004 at University of Hyderabad (recognised as ‘Institute of Eminence by Government of India).
