Born in Charlotte, N. Carolina in the 1950s, Robert A. Cathey studied philosophy at Davidson College, and theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, Union Seminary (NY), and Duke University. His dissertation, "Foundations with Faces: Prolegomena to a Postliberal Doctrine of God" explored the problem of finding appropriate concepts in our times for the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. His first book, "God in Postliberal Perspective: Between Realism and Non-Realism" (2009) extended his research into the new Yale School of theology associated with George Lindback, Hans Frei, William Placher, Kathryn Tanner, et al. His most recent book is a Festschrift for Rev. Dr. John Pawlikowski, OSM, co-edited with Dr. Elena Procario-Foley, "Righting Relations after the Holocaust and Vatican II" (2018). Currently, he is researching a new work on natural theology in the Reformed (Calvinist) tradition. He taught philosophy, religious studies, and theology at Monmouth College (Monmouth, Illinois) and McCormick Theological Seminary (Chicago, Illinois). He is a past president of The American Theological Society (Midwest) and was a member of the Christian Scholars Group for Christian Jewish Relations (2008 - 2019). As Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA), he was chaplain at Monmouth College (1989-90) and a member of the Interfaith Work Group of Chicago Presbytery. He was a member of the Christian Leadership Initiative of the American Jewish Committee and Shalom Hartman Institute (Jerusalem). Currently, he is a participant in the Christianity for Rabbis Project of the Jewish Federation of Chicago and the Catholic Theological Union (2021-22). Robert lives in Hyde Park, Chicago with the Rev. Dr. Barbara H. Cathey (retired). They have two children, Laura C. Lubinski (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and Paul M. Cathey (Oakland, California).
