Jim Munroe

Jim Munroe’s journey as a writer began more than twenty-five years ago when his daughter was having difficulty learning to read. Already a writer of poetry and rhyme, Jim discovered that putting simple words into verse could make reading more enjoyable and help build confidence. Before long, funny observations from everyday life began turning into stories—and the seeds of what would eventually become Adventures in Harpersville were planted.

In 2006, Jim joined the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), but as often happens, careers and family kept his stories tucked away for years. With daughters grown and a granddaughter running around, Jim returned to those old manuscripts and decided it was finally time to bring Harpersville to life.

His first children’s picture book, The Sneezing Toucan, was published in 2021, followed by The Alligator’s Red Shoes in 2024. Both are part of Adventures in Harpersville, a series of humorous picture books written in verse where unusual animals, memorable characters, and a little bit of chaos are never very far away. More adventures are on the way, including That’s One Loud Cat and The Emu’s Glasses.

Jim’s writing extends beyond children’s books. He is also a poet with over 600 poems to his credit. He is also a novelist, and his current novel, Fallen Angels, is a contemporary historical thriller weaving today’s fentanyl crisis with the centuries-old opium trade. His poetry and original song lyrics draw heavily from life, family, memories, and the everyday experiences that have inspired his writing from the beginning.

Jim has participated in numerous Meet the Author events at schools, libraries and community organizations and is a member of several writing groups.

A U.S. Navy submarine veteran, Jim now lives in North Carolina. When he isn’t writing, there’s a pretty good chance he is in the yard or playing on a pool table somewhere in Raleigh. Rest assured, more stories, lyrics and poems will continue coming from Jim Munroe's Closet.
