Emma Nottage
Emma has been interested in, and surrounded by, music all her life. Her mum and dad used to sing her nursery rhymes and her mum also played the piano. Emma's big brother loved listening to his heavy metal favourites and her elder sister played the clarinet. As a family they always listened to records and to the radio. Emma began learning the recorder in primary school and went on to take piano lessons. In secondary school she took up the French horn and had singing lessons.
Emma went on to study music at South Downs College in Hampshire and achieved a 2:1 degree in music (BA Hons) from the University of Exeter. She followed this with a PGCE in Primary Music.
Emma has been a primary school teacher for the past twenty-two years and a private one-to-one/small group music tutor alongside this for the last seventeen years. She teaches a range of instruments and voice to adults and children. Emma is based in North Devon in the UK. Until April 2020 she taught face-to-face lessons in her home or in pupil’s homes in North Devon. In the light of the current global pandemic she has transitioned to offer online lessons via ‘Zoom’ and other platforms. She now teaches students all over the UK and across the globe! She is definitely going to keep the online lessons as an option for students moving forwards.
2020 opened Emma's eyes up to new opportunities online and she took the opportunity to co-author a collaborative book by twenty-three female entrepreneurs who have all overcome trials and adversity to go on to succeed in the online space. Emma sees music as being multifaceted and she is passionate about championing the true value of music in education and society and about how music relates to our entire learning, life and health. She is currently writing her first non-fiction book all about music and health and is creating an online course about how music can support and strengthen our mental health. Emma always aims to raise her students' levels of confidence and self-esteem alongside their musical skills. Emma sees it as her mission to turn around peoples' negative memories of music lessons and replace them with new, more joyous and fun musical experiences. She is also now training to add an NLP/Life Coaching stream to her business as she wants to help many more people to reach their full potential in life with confidence. Emma sees her writing and her work as her legacy to the world.
