Kate Wolfe Maxlow

After graduating with a Bachelor’s in History from the University of Virginia and a Master’s in Elementary Education from The College of William and Mary, Kate began her teaching career in Newport News Public Schools, Virginia, as a third and fourth grade teacher. She served as a social studies and grade level lead teacher before becoming a science and social studies elementary instructional coach. She was later named as the Supervisor of Employee Development before accepting a job as an educational consultant with Stronge & Associates.

As an educational consultant, she traveled the world presenting mostly on teacher evaluation and best practices for assessments, doing the majority of her travel to New Jersey, Wisconsin, Arizona, Miami, and South Africa. These opportunities shaped her realization that while each school and district has its own unique culture, every teacher and student has certain basic needs for feeling respected and effective.

While traveling the world was exciting, Kate missed working each day in a district that she could call home. In 2014, Kate took a job with Hampton City Schools as the Professional Learning Coordinator. Since that time, she has been working to ensure that all teachers have access to quality professional development that meets their interests and needs. She is particularly interested in any instructional strategies that engage students, both in the learning and in feeling like a part of a community. In 2018, Kate became the Director of Innovation and Professional Learning, and loves that trying out new things is literally in her job title.

Kate also works closely with other members of the Hampton Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment team to create a guaranteed and viable curriculum that is aligned with standards and competencies and provides a high-quality playbook of instructional strategies, techniques, and assessments. In 2021, she earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Old Dominion University, Virginia, with a dissertation focused on equity in virtual classrooms.

Kate has two children, Eamon and Esme. Her hobbies include education (which works out well for her job), watching Dr. Who with her husband and kids, and finding crazy family adventure deals on Groupon.
