Kathy Ellis

Kathy's last name is Ellis, and she really does work with immigrants along with newly arrived corporate executives to the USA. Ellis Island! Kathy has always been interested in language and cultural pursuits. She started writing poetry during her adolescent years and wrote a few poems in her 20s and 30s. Poetry was always dancing in her head but not writing was nagging her. Kathy said, "This is the year that I go back to writing!'' and she did in 2014. She was so nervous reading her first poem in public that she was gasping for breath. What a debacle. But to her surprise and in a short time, Kathy's poetry gained success. Kathy was gob smacked when her first poem was published in an anthology for Georgia Poetry Society. The world opened up by turning some of her poetry turned into song, serving as an editor of a poetry column for a national intercultural professional newsletter, co-facilitating various writing groups, publishing in over ten journals, and receiving awards. Kathy's poetry is often about relationships, nature, spirit, irony, the underworld, and a few light topics, too. "Marvela and the Broken Waters" is Kathy's third book of poetry, which showcases her commitment to addressing important societal issues through her art. The book is an illustrated poem novella that focuses on justice, healing, and feminism. Kathy holds a master's in education, additional graduate credits in linguistics and sociology, and various certifications. Kathy has resided in six countries, traveled to over 40 countries with the hope of traveling to the wonders of the world. She speaks Spanish and Portuguese. Kathy is a language coach for second language speakers and an intercultural trainer for the corporate and university worlds. She also teaches English as a second language in an adult education program, American-style business English in various sectors, and job search skills. Kathy volunteers as a language coach for Ukraine and Afghan female refugees. Kathy resides in Atlanta with her multilingual cats.
