John Poidevant came to writing in an unusual way. Inspired by his paddling adventures early in life, his writing career began when he submitted a story about whitewater paddling to his local college magazine. His unique history provides an uncommon backdrop for his writing. An avid kayaker, sailor, and motorcyclist, he has navigated the waterways and roads of the world at every opportunity. His love of nature and adventure helped temper the stressors imposed by his career as a school psychologist. For thirty years he helped students, teachers, and families weather the storms of life.
John has written numerous publications in journals and magazines. Into the Vortex…A Tale of Resiliency is his first novel and has received critical acclaim. His unique personal and professional background help bring his characters to life. His writing is fiction but based on real life events that capture the trials and tribulations of the students he served over the past thirty years. His experiences revealed that hope, optimism, and resiliency are key to surviving life’s challenges. These qualities are often lacking in today’s youth and the results are often tragic.
John currently serves as President of Resilient Horizons and provides resiliency training for youth and adults. He has done more than one hundred presentations at local, state, national, and international conferences. He was previously the Lead School Psychologist with the Cherokee County School District. In 2013, the Georgia Association of School Psychology recognized him as the School Psychologist of the Year. Before this, John served as an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of School Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
