Born in Paysandú, Uruguay, in 1920. Anthropologist, researcher, essayst and professor. He was director of Departament of Anthropology at the Faculty of Human Sciences of the University of the Republic, Professor of Environmental Anthropology at the Postgraduate Program in Environmental Engineering at the National University of Colombia, Professor of Anthopology at the National University and Director of the Center for Agrarian Studies at Catholic University of Santiago de Chile.
He taught the curses of Sociology at IPA (Institute of Artigas Teachers) and Cultural Anthropology at the University of the Republic and the Post-Graduate Course in Educational Sciences in IPA.
He worked for twelve years as a UNESCO expert on agrarian issues and environmental education in Colombia and Venezuela.
At the same United Nations agency, he was part of The Internacional College of Experts for the study of Human Ecology in arid areas.
Throughout his career, he received, among others, the folowing distinctions: Morosoli de Plata, 1996; Bartolomé Hidalgo Career Award,1996; Morosoli de Oro Award,2000; Distinguished Citizen of Montevideo, 2007; Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of the Republic, 2013; National Grand Prize 2018. Member of the National Academy of Letters of Uruguay.
He was published over fifty books on anthropological, sociological, environmental and historical topics in Uruguay, Spain and Colombia.
