Hazel King MA

Hazel was born in the early ‘50s in the South Wales Valleys into a coal mining family.

She has lived mostly in London – but spent a year in New York working with young ex-psychiatric patients; picked grapes in Israel and taught twice in the North of Nigeria.

She studied sociology at Reading University, and has a Masters from the School of Oriental & African Studies in London. After her studies she had an article published in the Journal of Religion in Africa on the cooperation between two leaders, one Nigerian & the other Welsh, both well ahead of their times - and then decided to live her own life, while having the privilege at times of getting alongside others in their related research.

Having worked in shops, restaurants & offices, it was unfortunately only teaching that enabled her to pay the mortgage. Later she started along with a Musician, running music & dance workshops in Primary Schools, culminating in pupils deriving pride from showcasing their skills.

Now officially retired she has been able to be a Carer for her parents in Wales – one of the benefits of having survived a serious cancer, along with being able to add to her autobiography begun over a couple of decades ago! Indeed these ‘Leukaemia – Dispatches from the Front’ will eventually form one of the chapters of a life lived in 5 year periods!

Her ‘signature serious/humorous style’ as it’s been termed, is a dry humour from the valleys of her birth, but understood in certain cultures besides (others need training).
