I am an artist, designer, and writer passionate about the environment, recycling, and reusing. I lived in Cambridge, MA during the Central Artery Tunnel Project, affectionately known as the Big Dig. The idea of dismantling the overhead expressway and rebuilding it underground captivated me. The ingenuity and creativity behind this enormous project and developing a solution for the island dump that was polluting Boston Harbor and a huge environmental disaster was magnificent. The transformation of Spectacle Island is a fascinating story. The results of the Big Dig project are astonishing. Witnessing the execution of the massive project as it morphed over the years and the results of the changing landscape and the reclamation of land inspired me to write this story. It holds messages for young readers through the experience of Specs, a chipmunkel who took a risk and learned about navigating through life.
