Derek Farmer

Derek Farmer is a Yorkshire author whose love of storytelling, history, and memorable characters has inspired a writing career that spans education, children's fiction, and historical novels.

Born and raised in South Elmsall, West Yorkshire, Derek graduated with an engineering degree before pursuing a career in education. He became a secondary school mathematics teacher and later Head of Mathematics, while also authoring the popular Getting on with Maths textbook series, used by generations of students throughout the UK.

Today, Derek writes historical fiction, drawing readers into richly imagined worlds inspired by real history and timeless human experiences. He is the author of The Lotherine Trilogy, an epic saga set in a fictional village on the east coast of the Scottish Highlands. Through love, loss, family secrets, and the upheavals of the twentieth century, the trilogy follows characters whose lives are shaped by both choice and circumstance, culminating in What Fate Dictates.

Derek is also the author of Somewhere in Yorkshire, a children's adventure story written for his grandchildren and inspired by his affection for Yorkshire and family life.

When not writing, he enjoys researching history, exploring the landscapes that inspire his novels, and spending time with family. He believes that the best stories are those that connect generations and remain with readers long after the final page has been turned.
