Debbie Martin is the hooman who looks after the real-life Boggle, Bruce, and Wise-Dog-Next-Door (Rosie, who features in later books in the series).
When her own daughters were young, she amused them by making their pets ‘speak’ – sometimes just to make them laugh, and sometimes to suggest how they could deal with something they found difficult. Boggle, Bruce and Wise-Dog-Next-Door speak in the same way to all young children everywhere. It’s so much easier to listen and understand when it’s a cuddly pet – not an adult - telling you (or a mischievous spider)…
The Boggle and Bruce stories are aimed at helping young children and early readers experience and find ways of dealing with some of those difficult things 'hooman' children have to deal with as they start nursery and school. Having been a nursery and primary school teacher in the past, Debbie's rather familiar with them! The Ali En and B.A.D. Robot stories are for children aged 7 years upwards, and bring together fun, fact and imagination in a form intended to show children that EVERYONE has a talent, boy, girl or alien (and even adults!).
Debbie doesn’t have a pet Mexican Red-Kneed Spider, by the way. He’s part figment of her imagination, and part based on the giant Bird-Eating spider kept in the Biology lab when she was at school, and which she still has nightmares about! Completely unlike Red Legs, of course, who’s really just a big hairy, red-kneed bundle of fun...
