Chris Roland

Chris is an English language teacher, trainer and methodology writer with over 20 years’ experience. He has worked with teachers in numerous countries and contexts, often running intensive courses covering classroom strategies and techniques. He is a tutor on the Trinity Certificate and Diploma courses and has held positions with the British Council in both Spain and Syria. He is currently based in Seville where he teaches primary, secondary and adult learners at ELI, a private language academy.

His first book Understanding Teenagers in the ELT classroom (2018) was nominated for an ELTon award. His second book Structuring Fun for Young Learners in the ELT Classroom (2020) has also recently been published by Pavilion - with another two smaller volumes Structuring Fun for Young Language Learners Online (2020) and Understanding Teenage Language Learners Online (2021) showing how key principles covered in the main books map over to an online context.

His current areas of work are: helping teachers to cope with challenges in the classroom, the psychological terrain of a teacher’s working day, task design, the micro-mechanics of going over exercises and the workings of what we call ‘fun’. He is also a regular contributor to English Teaching Professional magazine and speaks on the international ELT conference circuit. His sessions are highly practical and filled with photos, anecdotes and examples of student work from his own lessons.
