George S. Thompson

George S. Thompson, MD is cofounder and Chief Medical Officer of Velocity Health Group, which pioneers residential treatment programs for youth with acute and complex mental health needs. He founded and leads The Thompson Center –­ Relational Psychiatry & Nervous System Care in Houston, Texas. For more than three decades, he has worked with children, families, and adults facing trauma, attachment disruption, and other mental health challenges, helping them build safety, trust, understanding, and connection.

Dr. Thompson was appointed Chairman of the Polyvagal Institute’s board of directors in 2024 and served on the DDP Institute board from 2014 to 2020. He is a coauthor with Marilyn Sanders of Polyvagal Theory and the Developing Child, and with Edwina Grant and Kim Golding of Working with Relational Trauma in Children's Residential Care.

Across his clinical, teaching, and systems work, Dr. Thompson integrates rigorous nervous system science with deep empathy and a belief in each person’s innate drive and capacity for healing and growth.
