My Story:

I grew up in a section of North Dallas which had a large Jewish community. My high school, for example, was about half Jewish. I was raised as a Reform Jew, which is the most liberal and secular form of Judaism. My Jewish studies were at the Temple and started at a young age, including lessons in Hebrew. I had my bar mitzvah at age 13.

I was also strongly influenced by my grandfather Simon. He was a first-generation immigrant, and his occupation was teaching Hebrew at a Jewish school in New York City. He and his wife kept a Kosher home.

Generously, God had placed a strong desire in my heart to have a personal relationship with Him at a young age. I was attracted to Eastern religions, and began practicing Transcendental Meditation.

I attended Texas A&M University and was accepted into Veterinary School. One day, while still in my undergraduate studies, I was surprised by a call from an old friend from Dallas. We had been friends in high school, and enjoyed many previous discussions about spiritual matters and Eastern belief systems. He was calling to tell me that he had become a Christian. I was shocked at this news, and, considering the depth of our friendship, told him insultingly that I thought he had lost his mind. Nonetheless, out of respect for him, I agreed to attend the small house church in Dallas, where he said he had come to know the truth about Christ.

A few weeks later, I went to the house church with yet another friend. We were welcomed warmly by those nine or ten other people attending, and proceeded to have a Bible study. The Bible study did nothing for me, and afterwards they asked if we wanted to stay for their worship service. Before I could decline, the friend who had given me a ride said he would love to stay, and so I was stuck. We went into the small chapel, which was the living room of the house. It was furnished only with a podium, a few candles, and some metal folding chairs. I sat in one of the chairs waiting for the service to start. While sitting there, I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit descend upon me!

Now, I had been practicing meditation for about five years at this point, and was adept at getting calm and quiet at a very deep level. This was completely different, however, as there was a personality attached to this Spirit, whom I recognized as Jesus!

I accepted Him as my source of salvation, and began to study the Bible. Delving into the Scriptures, I developed a passionate appreciation for the deep Jewish roots found in the life and teachings of Jesus. This continues to be a heartfelt source of fascination to me to this day.

I wrote Neat Jewish Stuff for Christians when I realized that Christians grow in worshipful appreciation of Jesus when His roots in Judaism are understood!
