John Malyon is a university scientist who has written a series of ingenious and warm-hearted detective tales, each with a strong nautical element. His detective, DCI Tom Tallis, is based in Plymouth UK where he works with his long-suffering colleague DI Iain Gemmill.
The first story, ‘Seas Threaten’, concerns the shooting of a competitor in the course of a transatlantic single-handed sailing race. In the second, ‘Unholy War’, Tom has to deal with a major terrorist threat to Plymouth. The third, ‘Lidya’, is about the troubles of an Ethiopian woman falsely accused of killing her own children.
At the start of the series Tom is widowed, with two children in their early twenties, but he finds a new—and not altogether easy—relationship which is gradually worked out as the series continues.
In planning and writing these stories John has greatly enjoyed the company of a small writers’ group in Cambridge.
