Stephan Hartmann

Stephan Hartmann is Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Philosophy of Science at LMU Munich and Co-Director of the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP). His research explores how we acquire knowledge, evaluate evidence, make decisions under uncertainty, and develop scientific theories about the world.

Combining ideas from philosophy, probability theory, and cognitive science, Hartmann has worked on topics ranging from Bayesian reasoning and collective decision-making to the foundations of modern physics. He is the author of numerous articles and books, including Bayesian Epistemology (with Luc Bovens) and Bayesian Philosophy of Science (with Jan Sprenger), both published by Oxford University Press.

His current work focuses on human reasoning, argumentation, social epistemology, and the philosophical foundations of quantum theory. Through his writing, Hartmann seeks to make rigorous thinking about knowledge, science, and rationality accessible to a broad audience.
