Michael Waterman is a mathematician and biologist and is University Professor Emeritus at the University of Southern California and Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Virginia. He is an elected member of the US National Academy of sciences, the US National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the French Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was a Guggenheim Fellow and received a Gairdner Foundation International Award in Biomedical Sciences, the Dan David Future Prize in Bioinformatics, and the Bentner Prize in Applied Mathematics.
