Monique Shaw was born in Harlem, New York and raised in Brooklyn until the age of 10 years old. Her family then moved to the south, Columbia, South Carolina. Being the oldest of
five children, she would find solace when watching television. Her passion began to
grow for the art of directing when she found herself watching Steven Spielberg’s, Indiana
Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Her young mind would wonder about the camera angles, the
production design and the actor’s performance. She was determined to find out
everything pertaining to the art of filmmaking.
Monique attended the University of South Carolina where she received her Bachelors in
Media Arts, along with making the Dean’s List. After graduation she was hired as a South
Area Marketing Consultant with Verizon Wireless in Alpharetta, Ga. Corporate media
opened her eyes to the various creative outlets of storytelling, but it wasn’t quite
enough. In her personal time, she would collaborate with other creatives’ as an Assistant
Director. Her projects included a monthly lecture series that developed into a short film
documentary, in addition to a powerful PSA that gave insight to the commercial
exploitation of children and the organizations committed to rescuing girls from that
path.
Monique quickly realized the possibilities of producing more than just corporate videos,
so, after working as a Marketing Consultant for over 7 years she decided to step out on
faith and quit her stable, well-paid marketing job and start working as a production
assistant in the film industry. Out of work consistently for 2 years, Monique still believed
that this life altering decision was a now or never situation at this point in her career.
Finally, in 2015, she connected with an industry professional from Los Angles, California
that took a chance and gave her the very first opportunity to work on a feature film - The
Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. It didn’t take long for her to realize that being on
set was where she was supposed to be; her true calling. Monique soon began to work on
projects with Netflix, HBO, Lionsgate, 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures.
Monique is the mother of 2 beautiful daughters, she is a Military wife, the Co-Founder of
First Team Productions LLLP where she is co-authoring a book series and the owner of
I.M. Media Productions, LLC where she creates content for small businesses. Her future
endeavors will continue to create a space where young future filmmakers are set on the
right path to make their dreams a reality.
