Stephen C Druce

Dr Stephen C. Druce is a Southeast Asian expert who has spent many years in the region carrying out research, working and travelling. He has an eclectic range of research interests and has published on various aspects of Southeast Asian history and archaeology, the relationship between orality and writing, oral tradition, regional Indonesian politics, contemporary conflict management in Southeast Asia, international relations in the Asia Pacific region and Islam in Southeast Asia. He is particularly interested in the early history and development of complex society in Sulawesi and Borneo. Stephen is currently working on a monograph that focuses on 400 years of Islam among the Bugis and Makassar of South Sulawesi.

He has lectured at several UK universities, such as Hull and Leeds, and in Indonesia. Since 2011 he has been based at Universiti Brunei Darussalam where he is currently Deputy Director of the Academy of Brunei Studies and Associate Researcher in the Institute of Asian Studies. He is also the Chief Editor of the Brunei Museum Journal and a member of the International Indonesian Forum's main steering committee.
