Steven Gish

Originally from Iowa, Steve Gish is a retired Professor of History at Auburn University at Montgomery in Alabama. In high school, he applied to be a foreign exchange student and was asked to indicate the three countries he was most interested in visiting. He put down Australia, Italy, and Japan but was sent to South Africa instead. He has been fascinated by South Africa ever since. He is the author of Alfred B. Xuma: African, American, South African (New York University Press, 2000); Desmond Tutu: A Biography (Greenwood, 2004); and Amy Biehl's Last Home: A Bright Life, a Tragic Death, and a Journey of Reconciliation in South Africa (Ohio University Press, 2018).
