Matthew Butler

I research and write about the history of modern Mexico, the history of Catholicism in Mexico and the U.S. Southwest, the history of indigenous people, and Mexican agrarian history. I am the author or editor of seven books and about fifty published essays. About half of my published writing is in Spanish. My next book, Mexico’s Spiritual Reconquest: Indigenous Catholics and Father Pérez’s Revolutionary Church, is forthcoming with University of New Mexico Press. I am finishing another book, called Liberty in the Church: Catholic Dissent in Modern Mexico.
