Brian Shott is a historian of the nineteenth-century United States and the author of Mediating America: Black and Irish Press and the Struggle for Citizenship, 1870-1914 (Temple University Press, 2019). His academic work has appeared in the Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era and several scholarly volumes; his journalistic writing has been published in the San Francisco Chronicle, the Los Angeles Times, and other newspapers and websites. He lives in Berkeley, California, and has taught history in San Quentin Prison through Mount Tamalpais College.
