Steve's novels and nonfiction books reflect insight into the world of conflict, murder, and justice based on experience as a homicide detective and chief forensic investigator. He also investigated many deaths alongside Dr. Jan Garavaglia of Dr. G: Medical Examiner fame.

Many years ago, his daughter's elementary school teacher asked what her father did for a living. She said, "He shoves bodies in the back of a truck." Although true, transport was done in a medical examiner's vehicle.

He lives in Metropolitan Atlanta with his wife Sharon.
