I am an Australian deaf author/artist with a quirky sense of humour. My writing talent bloomed early, before kindergarten when my Mum bought my first typewriter, a red metal one with a ribbon. Over time I wrote stories influenced by the kids in my class and my imagination. An in class event involving my Mum and my teacher with the influence of 1980s daytime Australian TV I developed my first goal. I saw celebrities being interviewed on TV about their books. It was so glamorous and I wanted my stories to have that kind of influence. I wanted to be a famous writer and publish a book.
As the school years passed my skill continued to flourish, influenced by books I had read (Paul Jennings, Roald Dahl, R.L Stine, Dean Koontz and Stephen King) and many, many movies from many, many decades I had won my first competition. My high school ran a creative writing competition and I entered. I entered one of the many stories I wrote, this one was inspired by the 1980s movie 'Gremlins'. Good news came that day when I won! It was an encouragement award from the Sydney Morning Herald.
Around this time something wonderful happened. I had another idea for a story and this one stuck with me for a very long time. I would add more to the story every now and again as real life started to take over as I grew up and out of high school and into adulthood.
It was the story of Lavender. She started out as a simple story and took on a life of her own as I got older and my style of writing changed. More ideas popped into my head and the story, especially how they would all get out of sticky situations. The quirky humour still remained strong and my editor (Mum) loved every bit of it and offered some fabulous critiques and corrections for story flow.
Finally I was able to put an ending to Lavender's adventure and published my first (and hopefully not only) novel on Amazon in April 2022. I wanted to get my novel under more of the younger generation's eyes and decided to enter The Prime Minister's Literary Awards 2023. Unfortunately I didn't make the finalist but will try again one day.
So please enjoy Lavender and her adventure with many unusual friends and the quirky way she gets home. It's not like anything else you have read.
