Sandra M. Mayo

Mayo holds both a Ph.D. and M.Ph. from Syracuse University, in addition to a MA from the University of Buffalo, and a BS from Buffalo State University College. She is a retired full professor (emerita) from Texas State University in San Marcos where she served as the Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Theatre and Dance (2013-2017) and Director of the Center for Multicultural and Gender Studies (MCGS) (2001-2013).

Sandra M. Mayo’s book publications include Frederick Douglass: Reflections on a Struggle for Freedom (2022), Black History Plays 1823 to 2020s: An Annotated Bibliography (2022), Stages of Struggle and Celebration: A Production History of Black Theatre in Texas (2016) (coauthored with Dr. Elvin Holt), Acting Up and Getting Down: Plays by African American Texans (2014) (coedited with Dr. Elvin Holt), and Integrating Multiculturalism into the Curriculum: from the Liberal Arts to the Sciences (2013) (coedited with Dr. Patricia Larke). Her work with San Antonio playwright Sterling Houston includes publication of two anthologies of his work: Myth, Magic, and Farce: Four Multicultural Plays by Sterling Houston (2005) and High Yello Rose and Other Texas Plays by Sterling Houston (2009). Houston’s play Driving Wheel is featured in Mayo’s anthology Acting Up and Getting Down: Plays by African American Texans (2014).
