David Steele

David Steele has been a professional sports journalist for more than 35 years. He has been a reporter and a columnist at several outlets, including The Sporting News, the Baltimore Sun, the San Francisco Chronicle, Newsday and the National Sports Daily. His work has appeared at ESPN’s Andscape, the NAACP’s The Crisis, The Grio and the Washington, D.C. City Paper. His third book was published in July 2022: It Was Always a Choice: Picking Up the Baton of Athlete Activism. He also is the co-author of Silent Gesture: The Autobiography of Tommie Smith, and of Four Generations of Color, the autobiography of pioneering baseball scout and sports agent Miles McAfee. He has won writing awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, the Association of Black Media Workers, the Associated Press Sports Editors, the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association, the Chesapeake Associated Press, the California News Publishers Association, the Florida Sportswriters Association and the Society of Professional Journalists.
