Dr. Faisal Mirza is an author, artist, entrepreneur and surgeon who grew up and trained in Canada and now considers the Bay area home. Faisal nurtured his writing and began painting while living in San Francisco to expand awareness beyond scientific bias and barriers in healthcare and research. It was his most challenging of shoulder injury patients in wheelchairs that led him to start expressing his thoughts outside of the conventional constraints of medical science. This foray into creative writing and painting allowed a free flow of ideas towards innovative thinking but also inculcated a passion for the writing.
This was very much reflected in his melodic prose style of poetic inspirational memos to himself which broke traditional writing styles, eventually leading to his first self-published work, ‘Think Breathe Be’ in 2016. Recently, Faisal co-authored and published a children’s storybook with his kids, ‘Porsche The Frog Adventures: Porsche Goes Hiking’ in 2024, now also available in local libraries. This book recently received the top runner-up in the 2025 New York Book Festival under the category of children’s books.
Faisal’s abstract paintings in oil and acrylic convey a multi-dimensionality in perspective and texture, best appreciated with a combination of touch, sight, motion and lighting; incorporating unique patterns and motion. His work has been exhibited previously in DC and LA and recently in 2025 at several locations including a gallery showing at the 2025 Laguna Beach Arts Festival.
The diversity, arts and cultural milieu of California certainly awakened a healthy passion of the arts as he progressed from the academics to federal policy and regulations in DC to biotechnology in LA and back into clinical practice and building startups locally. Faisal is Co-Founder COO of Kinisi Inc, an advanced wearable to prevent joint injuries, and provides clinical care at Zuckerberg SF General Hospital as UCSF Clinical Associate Professor and Concentra, as well as being a Qualified Medical Examiner. He enjoys free time with his kids hiking, cycling, swimming, tennis and chess with whimsical Dad jokes.
