Sharon L. Gilman

Dr. Sharon L. Gilman is a Professor of Biology at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC, just inland from Myrtle Beach. She received a PhD in Biological Oceanography from the University of Rhode Island and a BA in Biology from McDaniel College in Maryland. Her research interests have evolved from marine fish ecology to science education, and she now investigates the methods by which students of all ages learn about science and the environment. She has helped coordinate professional development for k-12 science teachers and been involved with three different S.C. Dept. of Education Math Science Partnership grants with local school districts. She has been an evaluator for a National Science Foundation-funded GK-12 project associated with the Coastal Marine and Wetland Studies Master's program at CCU, and has been involved in numerous informal education programs aimed at teaching people about the environment. She typically teaches undergraduate evolution, vertebrate zoology, animal behavior, and introductory courses in biology, and has taught a graduate course on communicating science to non-scientists. Sharon grew up in Pennsylvania, a little biologist from the start, and lover of animals and the wonderful planet we share.
