Gamaly’s biography
Eugene G. Gamaly born in Kharkov (Ukraine), graduated from high school in Mariupol (Ukraine). He got M.Sc. in physics from Moscow State University, (1958), Ph.D from the Federal Nuclear Centre, Russia, (1970), DSc, Professor of Physics from P. N. Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, (1980). In 1958-1973 he has been working in the fields of high temperature/density plasma physics intertwined with nuclear fission/fusion for the Federal Nuclear Centre. In 1973 Professor Basov, Nobel Laureate, invited Gamaly to join his team in P. N. Lebedev Physical Institute for works on the laser-induced fusion. The studies during 1973-1992 featured the pioneering research on the Laser-Induced-Fusion, and on the fundamentals of short/intense laser-matter interaction. These studies were continued in the Laser Physics Centre of the Australian National University (1992 – 2015) being extended to subtle material modifications, nanostructures’ formation, generation of the extreme energy density and novel materials. Gamaly authored and co-authored two books, 25 book chapters and more than 300 papers in the refereed journals.
Gamaly lectured on general physics in the Moscow Aviation Institute (1982-1990), on the laser-matter interactions in the Moscow Technical University (1990-1992), in the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana (Mexico City, 1997-99), in the University of Aix-Marseille (2014, 2015), in the Osaka University (2019)
