David J. Elliott

Dr. David J. Elliott is Professor of Music and Music Education at New York University (NYU). Elliott is co-author with Marissa Silverman of "Music Matters: A Philosophy of Music Education" (2015, 2nd ed. OUP), co-author of "Musical Bodies, Musical Minds: Enactive Cognitive Science and the Meaning of Human Musicality" (2022, MIT), author of "Music Matters: A New Philosophy of Music Education" (1995,1st ed. OUP), co-editor of "Artistic Citizenship: Artistry, Social Responsibility, and Ethical Praxis" (2016, OUP), co-editor of "The Oxford Handbook of Philosophical and Qualitative Assessment in Music Education" (2019, OUP), and co-editor of "Community Music Today" (2013, R&L Education). He has published 52 refereed journal articles, 48 refereed chapters in edited books, and presented 325 conference papers/invited university lectures in 50 countries. Elliott is a professional jazz trombonist and an award-winning jazz composer/arranger.
