Elizabeth Barnert (Liz) is a pediatrician and associate professor at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). She received a bachelor’s degree in biology (2001) and a master’s of science degree in public health (2007) from UC Berkeley, an MD degree from UCSF in 2009, completed pediatrics residency at Stanford in 2012, and earned an MPH from UCLA in 2014 while a post-doctoral fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program. Her research, grounded in human rights and social action, examines children affected by violence, family separation, and incarceration. A writer, scholar, and activist, Liz has received numerous awards and published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles, provides regular consultation to lawmakers, and has appeared in many media outlets, including to discuss how traumatic family separation affects children on Jonathan Van Ness's "Getting Curious" podcast. A Cuban-American born and raised in Los Angeles, Liz provides pediatric care to adolescents in juvenile detention facilities. Her work is guided by the principle that all children should have the support they need to thrive.
