Sonn Franken

Ny name is Sonn Franken, I'm an author from the south of The Netherlands.

I wrote a book with the title “In de Schaduw van de waarheid”, or in English “In the shadow of

the truth”.

The book is written based on stories of people who lived during the Second World War. It is about a

subject that you will never find in the official history books: Dutch people that were abducted by the

German military and brought to the German homeland to work for them.

My father was taken to Germany and was trained to be a motorcycle courier,

delivering messages and parcels from France to Russia and accompanying convoys

Being a foreigner, they would have been placed at the head of a convoy, or at the end, the spots

which were likely to be subject of enemy fire.

It offers a view on the war though the eyes of a 17-year-old lad that sees the atrocities of war, but

also encounters friendships on the most unsuspected ways. It shows hope, friendship, death and

despair on all sides. How to be under German restrain, contacts with the French resistance, and hope

to see the end of war and to be able to return home to family and friends. But also, about friendships

with German people that last till today.

Parts of the book found their way in winning writing contests, both in The Netherlands as well as

Germany. It led to contact with a German translator that found it important this story would be

available in Germany too. Thus, she offered to translate the book into the German language, and

with doing so contributing to maintain the stories of Dutch and German people that suffered from

the brutalities of the war, and proving casualties and suffering were to be found on both sides of the

battlefields.

December 2020 “Im Schatten der Wahrheit” was released in Germany.

Also this book found its way To Princess Margriet, Princess of The Netherlands, and to the Lincoln and

Welland Regiment, Canada, being the liberators of the authors hometown of Bergen op Zoom.

Last year I got into contact with a Dutch American translator, living in Massachusetts. They got

chatting about mutual roots and passions. When learning about the book, he got interested and after

reading some chapters he offered to translate the book into American English.

I'm a Dutch author that have released a number of books, I write both poetry as well as

thrillers.
