Brian Jeffrey Maxson

Brian Maxson is Professor of History at East Tennessee State University. A first-generation college graduate, he was introduced to the study of medieval, Renaissance, and early modern history while at Michigan State University and completed his doctorate at Northwestern University in 2008. Since 2008 he has worked at East Tennessee State University, a mission-driven university nestled in the breathtaking Appalachian Highlands. Brian is the author and editor of many books and has received fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, Villa I Tatti - the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the American Philosophical Society, and others. From 2022-2024 he served as an articles' editor for Renaissance Quarterly, the world's leading academic journal for Renaissance studies. He is currently working on two monographs entitled "The United States Finds the Italian Renaissance" and "Renaissance Humanism in Context." When not learning, teaching, and writing about the premodern past, Brian enjoys quiet time outside with his family.
