Jonty Winch

Dr Jonty Winch obtained an MA with distinction (De Montfort University) and PhD (Stellenbosch University). He has written articles for accredited international academic publications, receiving the British Society of Sports History 'Best Article' award in 2008. An involvement in more than a dozen books on education and sport in southern Africa includes 'Rhodesia Rugby: A History of the National Side 1898-1979' (RRFU, 1979); 'England's Youngest Captain: The Life and Times of Monty Bowden' (Windsor, 2003), and 'World Champions: The Story of South African Rugby' (HSRC, 2022). He has also played a prominent role in recording a full history of South African cricket, co-authoring 'Cricket & Conquest: The History of South African Cricket Retold 1795-1914' (HSRC); 'Cricket & Society in South Africa 1910-1971: From Union to Isolation' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018) and 'Too Black to Wear Whites: The Remarkable Story of a Cricket Hero Rejected by the Empire' (Penguin/ Pitch, 2020). The last-named publication was the 'highly-commended runner-up' in the 2021 Cricket Writers' Club book awards on the occasion of their 75th Anniversary at The Oval, London.
