Dr. Katherine Dockweiler is an Assistant Professor at Nevada State College. Improving systems and policies to positively impact students' mental health and well-being is what she is all about. Whether it be through her work with Nevada State College creating career pathways for school-based mental health professionals, or working with schools conducting risk screenings and designing interventions, she is committed to support student mental health.
The confluence of Dr. Dockweiler's professional and personal experiences cultivated her scholarly interest in transformational policy design. Her core research ventures focus on policy pipelines for improving ratios for school psychologists, school counselors, and school social workers. The work is structured in alignment with the Active Recruitment, Training, and Educator Retention to serve our Youth (ARTERY) Pipeline Framework for School Psychologists that she developed. She is the author of "Advocating for Mental Health Supports in Schools: A Step-by-Step Guide" published through Routledge.
She is the Principal Investigator of the ARTERY Pipeline Project for School Psychologists awarded through the U.S. Department of Education's Mental Health Service Professional (MHSP) Demonstration Grant Program. Dr. Dockweiler also co-wrote the funded federal community project request to establish a School Psychology Mental Health Clinic at Nevada State College.
Dr. Dockweiler is Co-Founder of Healthy Minds, Safe Schools (HMSS), a comprehensive risk identification and remediation program to ensure school safety and student well-being. Proactive and preventative supports are needed to begin addressing the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students. The HMSS program has shown to significantly decrease (up to 77%!) student violence on both elementary and secondary campuses and is structured within a multi-tiered system of support framework. She has also co-authored two MTSS textbooks, "Multi-tiered Systems of Support in Elementary Schools: The Definitive Guide to Effective Implementation and Quality Control" and "Multi-tiered Systems of Support in Secondary Schools: The Definitive Guide to Effective Implementation and Quality Control" both published by Routledge.
She has been appointed by Governor Sisolak to serve on the Nevada State Board of Education for consecutive terms and prior to that, was appointed by Governor Sandoval to Nevada's School Safety Task Force to inform on state policy and best practices regarding school safety and student well-being. She also volunteers her time with other boards and professional organizations. She currently serve as Director of Government and Professional Relations for the Nevada Association of School Psychologists (NVASP), advocating for School Psychologists and the issues that directly impact students and the profession. Additionally, she serves as the Chair of the National Association of School Psychologists Communications Committee. She is a Past President of two associations: the UNLV College of Education Alumni Association and NVASP. It is with honor and enthusiasm that she provides service, engages in advocacy, and conducts research to directly impact education.
