I was just like all the other babies, fed on Cow & Gate baby milk, bounced on the knees of aproned aunts. Undiagnosed dyslexia meant that I was something of a late starter. However, making up for lost time, I now have over thirty years’ experience as a senior executive having held various MD, President, CEO and Chairman roles in finance, FinTech and e-publishing.

I’ve always felt that I had a book in me and for the last 15 years I’ve been collecting cuttings, notes, and ideas – virtually none of which, unfortunately, have found their way into this book. Greg, a favourite client, started me on my lunacy of attempting to codify what I do and how I do it when he told me he needed, “Piers in your pocket”. While this book is my noble attempt, it’s a pale shadow of what I actually do with young leaders who want to be inspired, and mature leaders who appreciate a thoughtful dialogue and a reminder to be inspiring.

I’ve always been a bit of an outsider but it never ruled me out. I’ve tended to find fertile ground. I’ve always done the best I could do. I’m lucky that in my career I’ve experienced the gung-ho 80s through the Jack Welch cookie cutter “dominate your market” years, and now on to something more consensual and thoughtful. I’ve enjoyed the journey.

I can see the pressures on business people rising, and I’m honestly not sure I’d want to be a CEO right now.

Over the last two decades, I am privileged to have coached and mentored over 120 C-suite executives from all over the world, worked with a dozen entrepreneurs and many “leaders of tomorrow”. I am always their strongest supporter and sometimes their toughest critic. I’m very fortunate that I’ve been given the opportunity to, as Joseph Campbell would say, “follow my bliss”. I know in my heart that coaching and mentoring is the work I was born to do.
