This article is to introduce my book which has been recently published at new generation publishing at Bedford in London and is entitled “I’m too polite’, Grandma ”
My book is a story about my childhood and about growing up in Rochdale. It is an autobiography about my life from early years until the age of twelve years old. It is a story about survival and also a self help book.
When I was seven years old my mother died suddenly and my world was turned completely upside down.
Before my mother died I had lived at Howard street in Rochdale with my two siblings, my
older sister Anne and younger brother David
We lived with our parents Geoffrey and Joyce Schofield. My book describes places in Rochdale that I
can remember as a child. Our lives were happy although we were not the richest family but we were comfortable as my father worked as an office clerk, so he made a reasonable living We Spent a brief spell living in an orphanage in Derbyshire. This is where the picture on the front cover of the book was taken. It is me at the age of eight years old with two of my friends from the orphanage, pat and Marion.
I was surprised what an education it was to live with other orphans and the memories are not all bad ones as we all supported each other through a problem that we all had in common. We had all lost our mother at a young age but for different reasons. I developed an inner strength that I did not know I had.
I have always been interested in reading and was reading by the age of five years old. Every day at school I read a Janet and john book. Then I took the book home to my mother, and I read the book to her and then returned the book to school the next day. Then I would go home with another janet and john book. All my writing returns back to my mother.
By writing my book I would like to help other people to overcome loss
My book has been a way of counselling myself about my feelings of loss. I know that we all have to deal with loss during our lives but I had to deal with it at a very young age. This strenghth has always stayed with me and all my writing relates back to my mother.
My book is about how I survived the loss of my mother at a very young age. I developed an inner strength.
