GEORGE POULOS

George Poulos is Professor Emeritus at the University of South Africa (UNISA). He obtained his BA Hons and MA degrees at the University of the Witwatersrand, and his PhD at Rhodes University. His research interests have been in the fields of phonetics and linguistics. He has specialized in the descriptive analyses of African Languages and has undertaken numerous field research trips in Southern Africa. He is the author of books and scientific articles on linguistic topics and has also presented various papers at international conferences. His current research is focused on evolutionary linguistics, and his latest publication is ‘On the Origins of Human Speech and Language’. He has received numerous awards, research grants and scholarships, amongst them, the ‘South African Man of the Year Award for Excellence’ (from the S.A. Greek Chamber of Commerce and Industries), a Research Grant from the ‘Institute for the Study of Man in Africa’ (ISMA), the ‘Alexander Onassis Research Grant’, a ‘Raikes Scholarship’ (Wits.), as well as Research Grants from the ‘Human Sciences Research Council’ (HSRC) and the ‘Pan South African Language Board’ (PANSALB). He has also received two ratings as an established researcher from the ‘National Research Foundation’ (NRF) of South Africa.
