Tim Hughes

Tim Hughes had enormous success with his first book, THE NAKED TUCK SHOP - Growing up Gay in the 1950s published in

2019. It regularly appeared in the top twenty gay memoirs on Amazon.

He has an extensive history of writing for the gay press. In London in the late 1960s he was the associate editor of JEREMY - the world's first glossy gay magazine and scored early interviews with David Bowie, Ian Mckellan and Quentin Crisp before they reached iconic fame. These interviews are featured in his new book GLITTER AND BE GAY - 60 Years of Gaiety and Grief. He was also a contributor to Bob Guccione's Penthouse Forum magazine and was commissioned to write articles for NEW SOCIETY and the SUNDAY TIMES MAGAZINE. He made frequent appearances on television in that period as a spokes person for the gay community and while he was still at school had a regular programme on ANGLIA TELEVISION where he interviewed celebrities like BARBARA CARTLAND and LIONEL BART.

In 1972 he moved to New York to take up a drama teaching position at CUNY - the city's free university. He had trained as an actor LAMDA, one of the UK's leading drama schools. A well as teaching he directed plays at several at various off-off Broadway venues including LA MAMMA. He directed the premier productions of celebrated gay playwright, CARL MORSE.

The theatre work was done in tandem with his gay journalism contributing articles to the alternative press including SOHO NEWS and the NEW YORK NATIVE, the city's leading gay bi-weekly newspaper.

When the AIDS pandemic arrived he retrained and took up a position as a counsellor in the HIV clinic attached to BETH ISRAEL MEDICAL CENTER. He lost two partners and many friends to the at the time untreatable disease.

He was featured in the BBC's PREJUDICE AND PRIDE - a series devoted to members of the pre-legal gay community and most recently has contributed to ATTITUDE magazine.
