John Gillett

Biography

I “John Gillett” was born in 1947 in a small fishing village called Twillingate, Located on Northeast Coast of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Newfoundland and Labrador is a beautiful rugged province. We are in my opinion a distinct society with our own dialect, and music. We have four or more languages here but English is the dominant language.

My fishing career started commercially in 1969 and at present I am still fishing a scaled-down version.

So this time in my life I have time on my hands I can do some writing about our Newfoundland Culture and way of life.

Living in Newfoundland and Labrador with its Northern maritime climate is not always good on the ocean. Also it don’t have many factories or opportunities for employment other than the resources around ones area to make a living. Resources like fishing, sealing, logging and mining.

It could snow here sometime each month for 10 months in Newfoundland and if you live in Labrador it could be 12 months. The ocean is frozen for months in the northern part of the province. So making a living here makes us strong and kind, sharing and caring people.
