G. Bruce Boyer

G. Bruce Boyer has been a noted men’s fashion writer and editor for more than forty years. He was associated with Town & Country magazine as Men's Fashion Editor for fifteen years. His feature articles have also appeared in Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Departures, Plaza Uomo [Sweden], Men’s Precious [Japan], Sarto, and The Rake among other national and international magazines. He was the first American fashion journalist to write for the noted Italian fashion magazine L’Uomo Vogue .

He is the author of three books on the history and direction of men's fashion: Elegance (W. W. Norton & Company, New York, 1985); Eminently Suitable (W. W. Norton & Company, New York, 1990); and True Style: The History and Principles of Classic Menswear (Basic Books, 2016). Additionally, he is the author of two books on the history of fashion in the cinema: Rebel Style: Cinematic Heroes of the Fifties (Assouline Press, 2006), and Fred Astaire Style (Assouline Press, 2005). He is a co-author of a three-volume study of American menswear in the 1930s, entitled Apparel Arts (Gruppo GFT, Milan, 1989), and a contributor and consultant to The Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion (Charles’ Scribners’ Sons, 2004). He co-authored Gary Cooper: Enduring Style (PowerHouse Books, 2011) with Mr. Cooper’s daughter Maria Cooper Janis.

He has appeared on national TV, National Public Radio, and as consultant and commentator on the TV documentary series for American Movie Classics, The Hollywood Fashion Machine, and Social Media Assets The Story of Cool . Profiles and interviews have appeared in The Rake (Japan), Free & Easy (Japan), L’Uomo Vogue (Italy), Plaza Uomo (Sweden), and Men’s Precious (Japan), among other international magazines and journals.

He has been associated with two exhibitions at The Museum of The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. In 2012 he co-curate the Ivy Style exhibition and contributed to the accompanying book published by Yale University Press. Along with Patricia Mears, Deputy Director of The Museum, he also co-curated the exhibition Elegance in an Age of Crisis: Fashions of the 1930s in 2014, and co-authored the accompanying book published by Yale UP. He has also moderated fashion panel discussions and spoken at events at FIT. In 2008 he was asked to read a paper at The Fred Astaire Conference at Oxford University, hosted by Oriel College.

He has been coordinator of public relations and media for the Custom Tailors & Designers Association of America, and is an editorial consultant on men’s clothing, fashion, and grooming. His extensive knowledge of the clothing industry and custom trades has also led him to private and corporate image consulting, and writer/consultant to the clothing manufacturing industry, designers, and retailers such as Paul Stuart, Zegna, Brioni, Loro Piana, Kiton, Borrelli, Robert Talbot, Edward Green, Ralph Lauren, Bergdorf Goodman, Drake's of London, Gant, The Armoury, and Vitale Barberis Canonico, among other international manufacturers, designer labels, and retailers.

He has been interviewed on podcasts Blamo and 99% Invisible. And most recently released a six-part podcast on his career produced by Canadian broadcaster Pedro Mendes.
