Steve Zeiger

Steve Zeiger was the eldest child born into a farming family. Raised in a rural farming community, his family and school experiences compelled him to honor his unique qualities, which did not include farming. Determined to seek out new cultures and experiences, he joined the Air Force after he graduated from high school. From basic training in January 1981 to his retirement in 2007, the Air force recognized his integrity, can-do attitude, and resilience. In 2012, he started volunteering and became an advocate for LGBTQIA+ service men and women. Steve’s commitment resulted in many firsts, including the addition of the Military Walking in the annual Pride Parade in St. Louis, a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Soldiers Memorial, and the lighting of the Memorial in rainbow colors. Steve continues to follow his adventurous spirit and has made a career out of seasonal work. In all that he is and does, the natural world remains his sanctuary.
