David Guenette

I’m the author of the climate fiction series The Steep Climes Quartet, with the first three titles, Kill Well, Dear Josephine, and Over Brooklyn Hills now out.

An Over Brooklyn Hills review in Literary Titans captures what I'm trying to do with the series: "Guenette isn’t just interested in disaster as spectacle. He’s interested in the way disaster becomes routine. A hot spell, a housing meeting, a town budget, a person trying to keep a home, a young worker needing air conditioning, a local government trying to respond without losing its soul. These details give the novel its weight. I felt less like I was being shown a future world and more like I was being asked to notice the one already forming around us. That’s unsettling. It’s also the book’s strength.

"The writing has a restless, observant quality that I found both engaging and, at times, intentionally uncomfortable. Guenette moves between characters with a wide lens, and his choices make the book feel crowded in the way real life is crowded."

I worked in book publishing as a developmental and acquisitions editor before shifting my focus to digital publishing, long serving as a journalist and editor for electronic publishing trade periodicals, and then as a consultant and electronic publishing business and technology analyst. While undertaking a deep energy retrofit of my house in Berkshire County, I combined my background in digital technologies and my growing understanding of building science and house renovation and retrofitting processes to found Retrosheath, a start-up that aimed to reduce cost for energy efficiency improvements in the built environment. I still live in the Berkshires and write, work with Averosa Records as digital marketing consultant, and run a publishing company, CMTI Publishing, which focuses on climate fiction and edited works of critical essays on digital media and culture.
