Like so many people in London I was formed by life in other countries. Scotland (my parents' ancestral home) Rhodesia (school) South Africa (university, then journalism) then for over 50 years London itself. I have been a Catholic priest since 1993. I think that in my life priesthood links with journalism in the desire to communicate, which has never left me. I am a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, elected after my book about the nuns who nursed with Nightingale in the Crimean war.
