Ruth Whiting, the creator of Lonely Bird and Lonely Bird’s Dream, is an artist and maker whose diverse works include oil paintings, kites, kinetic sculptures, and interactive installations. She has exhibited in museums, public spaces, and private galleries. Her illustration technique for the Lonely Bird books (which she likens to “modern-day illuminated manuscripts”) involves creating photographs and props as a foundation for oil paintings that are informed by old masters’ techniques of glazing and underpainting. Born in England to Australian parents, Ruth Whiting frequently collaborates with her husband, artist and kite designer Tim Elverston. They live in Florida with their two children.
